STRUCTURAL MECHANICS AND ACOUSTICS, BASIC COURSEVSM025
Byggnadsmekanik och akustik

Credits: 8. Grading scale: TH. Compulsory for: V2. Course coordinator: Ola Dahlblom, Erling Nilsson, Byggnadsmekanik. Recommended prerequisites: Recommended: Mechanics, Basic Course (VSM010). Assessment: Written examination, one smaller examination during the course and two compulsory laboratory exercises. Homepage: http://www.byggmek.lth.se.

Aim
The course is an introduction to structural mechanics and acoustics. It also gives the student fundamental knowledge and experience of importance to most other courses in the civil engineering programme.

Contents
Structural mechanics: Stress and strain. Section forces in statically determinate trusses and beams. Tension, compression, bending, shear and torsion. Elastic and elasto-plastic material behaviour. Two-dimensional state of stress. Yield criteria. Deflection of elastic beams. Statically indeterminate and beams. Second-order theory and buckling. Limit state theory. Acoustics: Noise and its effect on human beings. Recommendations and guidelines, description of sound, sound progration, sound insulation, absorption and room acoustics.

Literature
PP Benham, RJ Crawford & CG Armstrong: Mechanics of Engineering Materials, Addison Wesley Longman Limited, Second Edition 1996. Supplementary material in compendium. Akustiska grunder: mekaniska svängningssystem och vågutbredning, kompendium.
