Information technology plays an increasing role in the planning and coordination in the manufacturing industry. This is reflected in flexible manufacturing systems where computer controlled production cells are coupled via material handling systems. Industrial automation is the science to connect information systems with material and energy flows. Individual machines and components and their control can define the system. It can also be charecterised by disturbances, capacity and bottlenecks. In the course theories and methods for integrated systems describe these issues.

Integrated manufacturing - a survey. Structuring manufacturing systems. Combinatorial and sequencing control - control at the machine level. Grafcet and Petri nets. Cell level control - synchronising many machines. Communication in computer systems. Production control. Production design. Methods to calculate system capacity. Markov chains and Markov processes. Queuing systems. System reiability.
