Syllabus academic year 2001/2002

Halvledarfysik för E

Credits: 5. Grading scale: TH. Compulsory for: E3. Course coordinator: Forskarassistent Dan Hessman,, Fasta tillståndets fysik. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of physics and theoretical electronics. Assessment: To qualify for the written examination students must have completed the compulsory laboratory work.

In modern electronics, there is a very strong interplay between physics, devices, circuits and systems, in particular for integrated circuits. It is therefore necessary for an electrical engineer to know the basic priciples underlying semiconductor devices and to understand the limitations and possibilities of different semiconductor materials.

Electron gas, Fermi-Dirac statistics. Semiconductor crystals, structure, binding type, defects. Electrons in crystals, energy bands, effective mass, metals - insulators - semiconductors. Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, Hall elements ant thermistors. Generation, recombination and transport of charge carriers, pn junction and bipolar transistors. Optical properties, solar cells. MOS diode, MOSFET.
