|BIOCHEMISTRY, BASIC COURSE||KBK010|
Credits: 4. Grading scale: TH. Compulsory for: K2. Course coordinator: Professor Per-Olof Larsson and assistant professor Mats-Olle Månsson.Per-Olof.Larsson@tbiokem.lth.se, Tillämpad biokemi. Assessment: Written exam. Homepage: http://www.tbiokem.lth.se/Homepage/Kursen/Biokemi%20AK.html.
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge of the cell, its constituents and how these cooperate. The applied part of the course covers the possibilities of biotechnology.
The course gives insight in the structure of the cell and its macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids), their structure, function, formation and degradation. Also enzymatic catalysis, energy metabolism including photosynthesis are covered. The methods and possibilities of gene technology are described and also the use of enzymes and cells in various applications. The practical work includes the purification of lactate dehydrogenase from beef heart.
