COMMUNICATION SYSTEMSETS010
Kommunikationssystem för E

Credits: 4. Grading scale: TH. Compulsory for: E3. Course coordinator: Johan M Karlsson, Inst f telekommunikationssystem. Recommended prerequisites: Mathematical Statistics, Basic Course (FMS011) or (FMS021). Assessment: The written examination combines questions of a descriptive character and problem solving.

Aim
The purpose of the course is to give a basic principle for building telephone- and computercommunication systems. In particular the performance aspects are studied by using analytical tools.

Contents
Basic principles for the design of telephone and data communications system. The presentation of analytical tools and performance and reliability analysis as well as optimization of these systems are the main issue. The concept of traffic and traffic variations are discussed and also basic principles of network topologies and the design for telecommunication and local area networks.
The analytical part consists of queuing theory and stochastic models for real
time server systems to get performance measures of for example throughput and
utilization of the systems. Different queuing disciplines and reliability
concepts such as availability, time dependent failure rates and lifetime
distributions.
Comparisons between centralized and distributed systems.
