The purpose of the course is to provide the student with an introduction to terms, structures, processes, methods, actors and rules and regulations within civil preparedness, foremost within a Swedish context. Further, the course aims to introduce practical problems that professionals within the field may face. Finally, the course aims to form a basis for further studies within the field.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
• show an overarching understanding of common terms, structures, processes, methods, actors and rules and regulations within civil preparedness.
• be able to account for common practical challenges within civil preparedness.
• be able to problematize the complexity of the knowledge area.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
• be able to apply the theoretical and empirical contents of the course in practical course activities.
• both verbally and in writing show an ability to describe, communicate and discuss own arguments and conclusions.
• independently be able to identify and formulate common challenges within civil preparedness.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
• be able to participare in a problematizing discussion around important problems within the field, including relevant ethical considerations.
• independently be able to critically reflect over how civil preparedness is conducted in practice.
The course includes lectures and seminars where concepts, structures, processes, methods, actors and regulation within the area of civilpreparedness are presented and discussed. The students then get opportunities to apply the knowledge in exercises and seminares as well as in written essays. Moreover, presentations are given by practitioners in the area of civil preparedness. These lectures give the students insights into how it is to work professionally with civil preparedness, in different roles/professions that are relevant for the students.
Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: The course examination is through individual written assignments, completed peer reviews and active participation in obligatory seminars. If a student is absent from obligatory activities, such as obligatory seminars, this activity will be replaced with a written assignment. All examining activities must be passed in order to pass the course.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Credits: 2. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Active participation in mandatory seminars. Contents: Active participation in seminars with the purpose of training the ability to engage in academic discussion.
Assumed prior knowledge: Introduction to studies in risk, safety and crisis management.
