The course aims for the student to gain an overview introduction to concepts, approaches and methods within the area. The course also provides an introduction to the concept of sustainable development from a risk perspective. Moreover, the course aims to introduce professional roles for a MSc in risk, safety and crisis management. In addition, the course aims to create awareness around study strategies, group dynamics and project work. Finally, the course aims to provide the student with basic knowledge about literature searches as well as oral and written communication.

The course consists of lectures and seminars where usual concepts, approaches, methods, and issues within the subject area, as well as its relation to sustainable development, are presented and discussed. The idea is to provide an overview of what knowledge and skills that is needed to solve complex issues in the area of risk, safety and crisis management, with an introduction to which courses in the program that aim to provide this knowledge and skill. Furthermore, presentations are given by representatives of various potential professional roles for the student after graduation. In addition, lectures/workshops are conducted focusing on study strategies, group dynamics, working in projects, information search, written communication and presentation techniques. A group project is conducted.
Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: The examination consists of a number of small written individual reflections regarding usual concepts, approaches and methods within the subject area, as well as its relation to sustainable development. Furthermore, a group project is conducted which is presented in writing as well as orally Active participation in obligatory seminars is required.
