Aim

The aim with the course is to get elementary knowledge in Standard Chinese. The course is suitable, for example, as preparation for studies abroad or a future professional life where contacts with China can form part of the work.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• account for the most basic features of the Chinese writing system,
• account for the most basic features of the syntax of Standard Chinese
• identify and account for central phonetic phenomena of Standard Chinese.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• pronounce all initials, finals, and tones,
• use very simple words and phrases related to the most basic and concrete situations of everyday life,
• introduce themselves and others and ask questions about, for example, the name, home address and work of an interlocutor,
• communicate in a very simple fashion about the most basic and concrete situations of everyday life, provided that the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly,
• identify and write approximately 100 characters.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• reflect on cultural differences and similarities manifested in source languages and target languages,
• reflect on their development in Standard Chinese and identify their need of further knowledge.

Contents

The course provides an overview of the phonetics, phonology, basic grammar and writing system of Standard Chinese based on the reading of elementary textbook texts. The student practices listening comprehension and written and oral presentation, based on a learned set of words and constructions.

Grading scale: UV - (U,G,VG) - (Fail, Pass, Pass with Distinction)
Assessment: Written and oral examination.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
