Aim

The course aims at providing an overview of the subject of district heating and cooling and at teaching knowledge about the role for district heating and cooling on the energy market and in the energy system.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

understand the specifics of district heating and cooling and how these technologies work, and have gained insight into the prerequisites of district heating and cooling on the energy market and its role in the overall energy system.

Contents

Main topics to be lectured on: Introduction – history, fundamentals, heat and cold markets. Heat and cold demands. Heat and cold generation. Environmental impact and opportunities. Distribution technology. Substations. Economics and future challenges.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: The examination is based on individual as well as on group work. For the grade 3, all obligatory assignments (individual or in group) have to be satisfactorily fulfilled. For higher grade, a written exam is required.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
