Aim

The course Advanced interaction design aims at providing knowledge about interaction with new types of information and communication technology. The course will deliver a content that will help the student to gain knowledge on how to make hi-fi prototypes of new interaction design ideas, where user input is sensor-driven. Another purpose is that the students will learn to handle a new technology platform while at the same time dealing with a user-centered design process.

Contents

The course is based on the group project and will train the students’ skills in independent planning, design and implementation of a prototype. Students will work in groups in a user-centered desing process with short iterations that has similarities with XP (eXtreme Programming). Structured supervision will be provided to help students reach their goals. The course is held together by activities that support the project work:

The project work is focused on experimenting with non-traditional (advanced) interaction methods, by making use of sensors like for example GPS, accelerometers and gyros, to provide input to the system and sound and vibration to provide feedback. An Android smart phone is used as a platform since it is programmable and contains many different sensors.

A selection of lectures provide a theoretical framework concerning advanced interaction methods that are mainly based on interaction beyond the traditional screen metaphor:

Some course elements are mandatory (see above). A compensation task that corresponds to the missed learning may be required in cases where a student fails to attend a compulsory element.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: For a passing grade the student must pass the group project work, actively participate in the compulsory course activities and fulfill individual tasks.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Admission requirements:

Required prior knowledge: TEK210/EXTA65 Cognition, EDAA01 Programming, Second Course.
The number of participants is limited to: 60
Selection: Admission guaranteed for students for whom the course is mandatory, and who have applied within the time limits. Selection rules for the remaining places: Credits remaining for the degree.
